Rumours linking Schalke’s Julian Draxler with a possible move to Arsenal or Man City have been consigned to the rubbish bin on Wednesday.
Earlier in the week, Sky Sports Germany circulated the rumour that Draxler could be headed for the Emirates Stadium or the Etihad, and that story was picked up by the English gutter press, who ran with it wholeheartedly.
The likes of the Express told their readers “Draxler wants to move to the Premier League, with Arsenal in pole position to sign the midfielder”, while claiming that the 21-year-old German international commands a transfer fee of £30 million.
The Star were even more ridiculous in their report of the story, farting that “Arsenal are likely to have stiff competition from other Premier League big-boys with Chelsea, Manchester United and City all being interested in the past”.
Less than 48 hours after the rumours first did the rounds, German daily Bild have now drawn a line through the transfer gossip.
Bild have spoken to Draxler’s agent Roger Wittmann, who has categorically denied the whole story. Wittmann told the tabloid:
There’s nothing in it. English top clubs have already been his interested [in Draxler] for a few years, but right now there is nothing concrete. Julian must once again be 100 percent fit.
The whole Draxler story seem representative of the English media’s thirst to spread transfer gossip, regardless of whether there is any actual factual basis for the claims being reported.
