Chelsea Ready to Offer Filipe Luis in Chase for Manchester United Target
The Daily Star have reported that Chelsea are ready to do yet more business with Atletico Madrid, saying that the Blues are prepared to offer left-back Filipe Luis as part of a deal for in-demand defender Toby Alderweireld.
The Belgian centre-back spent last season on loan at Southampton, and impressed a number of big clubs - including Chelsea and Manchester United, who are also reported to be interested.
Southampton are also in the race to bring Alderweireld back to England on a more permanent basis, reportedly having a fixed fee agreed with Atletico as part of the loan deal, but the Spanish club are said to be trying to get a better deal for themselves elsewhere.
Luis joined Chelsea last summer in a £15.8m deal from Atletico, but has underwhelmed at Stamford Bridge - Cesar Azpilicueta taking over left-back duties for a large portion of the season.
With Luis and Alderweireld both considered expendable by their respective clubs, a swap-based deal may suit both parties, as well as the players, who will be keen to keep playing first team football. The Brazilian in particular may favour a move back to La Liga, where he had played for nearly 10 years before his move to the Premier League.
Alderweireld played a large part in Southampton's success last season, as the rock in the centre of a defence which conceded fewer goals than any other team apart from eventual champions Chelsea. He missed eight games through injury after joining the club, and his importance was highlighted by the results in those matches, which saw the Saints win just three, and lose four.
The Blues have yet to sign any players so far this summer, although they're expected to announce the capture of Manchester United flop Falcao on loan from Monaco in the coming days
