Chelsea are closing in on a season-long loan deal for AS Monaco striker Radamel Falcao, according to reports.
The Mirror are today reporting that the Premier League champions will avoid paying the Ligue 1 side a loan fee for the experienced striker, but rather send three young players on loan to France.
It is common practice to pay a club a nominal fee and a player’s wages to take them on loan but Chelsea are looking to avoid incurring any fees to take the striker on loan for the 2015-16 season.
The two clubs have yet to decide upon which Chelsea trio will spend next season in France, but the newspaper is claiming that it could be Izzy Brown, Nathan Aké and Andreas Christiansen – three players all thought highly of at Stamford Bridge.
Radamel Falcao is coming off the back of a woeful debut Premier League season with Manchester United and a nightmare Copa América. He scored only four goals in 26 Premier League appearances this past season under Louis van Gaal and then managed only one shot on target in his three Copa América group games combined before being used only as a substitute in last night’s quarter-final elimination at the hands of Argentina.
At first, reports of Chelsea signing Falcao seemed laughable but as they continue to go on it appears José Mourinho is keen on the Colombian.
Should the Chelsea boss get the best out of the Colombian then it would be quite a coup, but there are still no signs of Falcao returning to his best since a serious injury 18 months ago. He often looked a yard off the pace at United and hasn’t shown any signs of improvement over in Chile.
Before picking up the serious knee injury in January 2014 that ruled him out of last summer’s World Cup, Falcao had been a prolific striker wherever he’d been in Europe – 41 goals in 51 Portuguese Primeira Liga games for FC Porto, 52 goals in 68 La Liga matches for Atlético Madridand 11 in 20 Ligue 1 games for AS Monaco.
